The rotary drilling rig is an essential piece of machinery in foundation engineering, widely used in pile foundation construction and geotechnical works. To ensure high construction efficiency and reduce maintenance costs, extending the service life of the rotary drilling rig is crucial. Extending the life of the equipment not only helps reduce downtime but also lowers overall maintenance expenses. Below are some effective ways to extend the service life of a rotary drilling rig:

1. Regular Maintenance and Inspection

  1. Regularly Inspect the Hydraulic System
The hydraulic system is one of the core systems of a rotary drilling rig, and its performance directly affects the rig’s efficiency and stability. Regularly inspect the hydraulic oil quality and level, replace the hydraulic oil when necessary, and ensure smooth oil flow to reduce system failures and extend the hydraulic system's service life. Additionally, inspect hydraulic hoses, cylinders, and seals to prevent leakage and aging.

  2. Inspect the Power System and Engine
The power system and engine provide the power necessary for the rig’s normal operation. Regularly check the engine’s oil system, cooling system, and filters to ensure smooth engine operation and prevent overheating or oil shortages. Clean the air filter and fuel filter regularly to ensure proper airflow and clean fuel supply.

  3. Check the Condition of the Drill Bit and Drill Rods
The drill bit is in direct contact with the soil or rock, and its wear directly affects drilling efficiency. Regularly inspect the wear of the drill bit and replace it when it becomes severely worn. Additionally, check the connections between the drill rod and other components to ensure they are secure to avoid damage from loosened parts.

2. Operate Correctly

  1. Control Drilling Pressure and Speed
Drilling pressure and speed are crucial factors affecting the service life of a rotary drilling rig. In the operation process, the drilling pressure should be controlled according to the type of soil. Excessive pressure can lead to premature wear and damage to the drill bit, while insufficient pressure may affect the drilling speed. Also, avoid high rotation speeds to reduce friction and heat accumulation on the drill bit.

  2. Avoid Overloading
Overloading the rig is one of the common causes of equipment failure. Continuous operation under overload conditions accelerates wear on the hydraulic system, power system, and drill components, shortening the equipment’s lifespan. Operate within the rig's rated load to avoid equipment damage due to overloading.

  3. Gradual Drilling
For complex soil layers or hard rock formations, gradual drilling is recommended. By controlling the drilling depth and pressure, you can reduce the load on the equipment and prevent premature wear of the drill components.

3. Proper Storage and Maintenance

  1. Properly Store the Equipment
After completing operations, store the rig in a dry and level area to ensure its safety. In wet or humid conditions, take measures to prevent moisture exposure to avoid rust or damage to electrical components. When storing, turn off the hydraulic system and engine, and clean the equipment of dirt and debris.

  2. Apply Anti-rust Treatment
The metal parts of the rotary drilling rig, such as the drill bit, rods, and hydraulic system components, should be treated with anti-rust oil to prevent rusting caused by exposure to moisture. During the rainy season or humid environments, increase the frequency of anti-rust treatments.

4. Train Operators

The skill level of the operators directly affects the efficiency and lifespan of the rotary drilling rig. Regular training ensures that operators are proficient in proper operating techniques and maintenance, which helps to improve work efficiency and extend the equipment’s life. Trained operators can adjust their methods based on geological conditions, minimizing wear and tear on the equipment.
